During the trip to Norfolk, Virginia, the IHA runners experienced what it means to be a good team member, responsible, held accountable, how to listen to commands, and how to keep in control while under stress. The team members also learned about the history of Naval Special Warfare at the SEAL Heritage Center at Little Creek NavalBase. The team was chaperoned by John Downey, IHA Director of Athletics and head cross country coach, and Jessica Bunone, assistant cross country coach.
On its first day, the IHA team completed a four-mile timed run and teamwork exercises. They then visited the Battleship Wisconsin and the Nauticus Science Center in Norfolk. On day two, the student-athletes worked out with the Scout Team and then listened to a presentation by Lori Tubbs, the SEAL’s nutritionist. On the final day, the cross country team participated in the SEAL Fitness Challenge, consisting of three workout stations: Surface Movements, Boat Crew Exercises, and Carries/Partner Carries.
After the Fitness Challenge, the team was invited to eat in the chow hall on base and visit the SEAL Heritage Center to learn about the history and development of Naval Special Warfare.
