Melissa hopes to study chemical engineering at Yale, a decision largely impacted by IHA's AP Chemistry course, taught by Science Department Chair, Mr. Stephen Opremcak. “After taking this course, I knew that chemical engineering was the field of study I wished to pursue for its ability to foster critical thinking to help better the world,” she explained.
Mrs. Melissa O’Sullivan, her guidance counselor, said she knew Melissa had what it took to be accepted into an Ivy League school; she couldn’t be more proud and excited that she was accepted into three. “Not only will Yale be getting a stellar student, but it will also be getting a young woman of charisma, character, and benevolence,” Mrs. O’Sullivan said. “Melissa is the true representation of an IHA student, and I’m thrilled she will be bringing her individuality and intellect to Yale University.”
Melissa said Immaculate Heart Academy has helped prepare her for college by allowing her to master her time management skills—she has learned to find the perfect balance between her schoolwork, extra-curricular activities, service, athletics and outside job. She is also grateful for the teachers she’s had at IHA.
“The amazing teachers that I have had the pleasure of knowing have greatly prepared me for life in college,” she said. “These teachers have taught me the value of critical thinking and the very basis for the love of learning for the sake of knowledge.”
