On February 25, 2016, members of the two IHA classes and teachers, Ms. Ana Echeverría and Mrs. Lourdes Sinkovitz, toured the various offices and broadcasting studios. Univisión Communications is an American media company serving Hispanic Americans that dates back to the first Spanish-language television network in the U.S. in the early 1960s.
Michelle Kaminski’16, an AP Spanish student, said the trip was incredible. A job in the field of communications has always been intriguing to her, and she said it was amazing to see the profession up close. “My classmates and I marveled at the green screens, anchor tables, technology, and set-up of the various studios,” Michelle said. “It was especially interesting to see a broadcasting studio intertwined with the diverse Spanish and Latin-American cultures.”
Many of the television shows broadcasted on Univisión are in the Spanish language and most employees are first and second generation Americans and immigrants from Spain and other Latin American countries. Employees took the time to share with the IHA girls their inspiring stories about how they embarked on their careers. The students also had the opportunity to chat with Mrs. Gladys Ibelli, mother of Ariana Ibelli’17, who works in the finance department at Univisión.
“This field trip allowed me to experience a real-life cultural immersion with my classmates,” Michelle said. “It opened my eyes as to how one is able to participate in a career they love that also involves their distinctive roots. The experience I had at Univision enlightened me, and I will always remember the happiness that radiated from each worker as they showed us what they love to do.”
