On Monday, February 22, Dr. Lapczynski addressed the club about the steps to pursuing a medical degree, including the pre-requisite classes to take in college, as well as insight into what four years of medical school entails. Dr. Lapczynski also touched on the ins and outs of emergency medicine including what is considered a somewhat normal day, because, "there is no normal day in emergency medicine," and steps to diagnose a patient with unspecified chest pain.
A Long Island native, Dr. Lapczynski pursued his undergraduate degree at Hofstra University, received his graduate degree from Barry University in Florida, and his DO from University of New England's College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he met his wife as cadaver partners. He is presently the chief resident emergency medicine physician in the Geisinger Health Care System in Danville, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Lapczynski concluded the presentation on how to correctly perform a lumbar puncture on a surgical model and welcomed the club members to perform one. Club moderator and science teacher, Dr. Erika Brennan, and the club were grateful that he made the trip from Pennsylvania and wishes him luck as he finishes his residency this June. He will move on to be an attending in July as a part of the Johns Hopkins Medical Group in Baltimore, Maryland.
